Break outs, bumps, skin not pretty after a facial???

Breakouts after Facial or Clay Mask! Why do I breakout after a facial or after using a face mask? Ever walk out of a facial hoping for glowing, perfect skin? But instead, you're faced with bumps, redness and sometimes even new pimples! Yikes! Was it a bad facial treatment or is this perhaps, normal? Well, it might not only be normal...it might actually be good! Facials and masks, while intended to treat and beautify skin, are not a quick fix solution. Facials and detox and acne masks are meant to clean deep down in your skin and get rid of the gunk and junk that lies deep in your pores. There is supposedly 'years' of oil, makeup, buildup and sunscreen that can be hiding in your 7 layers of skin and detoxifying face masks for acne pull that buildup to the surface in order to improve and heal skin. Once your skin has been cleaned deep and the junk underneath is gone, your skin will begin to heal and with continued use, you will begin to see the results you were hoping for all along! It's sort of like that, it's "gotta" get worse before it gets better thing. Your skin needs to purge the bad stuff out so that it can work to regenerate and clear up from the inside out. So don't be afraid of this crazy detox period your skin might experience after a professional facial or at home face mask. Allow your skin to truly detox and get rid of the nasties, so that you can soon enjoy balanced, even, clear and radiant skin! How do I know my skin is purging due to detox and not just breaking out? When your skin is purging, you will often have acne that is different than what you typically get in different spots, usually in the form of small whiteheads. These might be bad at first but with continued use of the facial mask, these will begin to subside. You might also have some redness and bumps immediately following a facial or mask, but this should also subside after about an hour or so. How long should the detox and breakouts after a facial or mud mask last? The amount of time it takes for skin to complete the detox period varies from person to person, it depends on a number of factors such as your skin type, Ayurveda Dosha, the amount of buildup you had under your skin and of course, diet & lifestyle choices. Which brings us to the next question... What can I do to reduce or prevent the detox and purging period? While you may not be able to completely avoid the detox period and prevent your skin from purging, there are definitely steps you can take to reduce and minimize the amount of time the detox period will last. First try to eliminate refined sugar, artificial sweeteners, processed food and dairy. One of the most important things you can do while you are in "detox mode" is to STAY HYDRATED! Drink a ton of water so that your body can continuously flush out any toxins and prevent your skin from getting overly dry. Eat a nutrient rich diets with lots of fruits and veggies! But, try to go for veggies that are cooked instead of raw. Try to avoid wearing makeup, but if you do need to wear makeup, wear oil free makeup and do not sleep with it on! Make sure to use a good all natural facial cleanser. Reduce stress with yoga, meditation and breathing exercises. Try aerobic exercise 3-4 times a week. The sweating and circulation help release toxins Do not get a facial from a spa or salon right before a big event, in case your skin does not react properly. So next time you're thinking about getting a facial - do not let the detox period prevent you from treating your skin. Facials and at home natural face masks are treatments that are meant to heal your skin, remove toxins and lead to a beautiful complexion, but it can take time to work it's magic! Detox and purging is normal and usually indicates that treatment is working. However, I would recommend staying away from a facial immediately before a big event, especially if it's your first time or haven't had one in a while. But, once you get started with facials and natural acne masks, after the first time and with continued use, you will definitely start to see an improvement. You can also start with a detoxifying face mask that is safe for sensitive skin and is less likely to break you out or cause any reaction. UPDATE: This blog post has received many comments and we have received many emails and questions, so I want to provide some clarification. Breaking out while you detox for example after a facial or a mask is one thing, but an actual breakout, rashes or reaction is completely different. If you are breaking out in an angry bout of pimples and acne after using a product, if your skin is having a negative reaction, like a rash, irritation, redness, burning, etc. - that is NOT normal and that product is not for you. A detox breakout or a breakout after a facial or mask is normal, we're talking a few pimples here and there, if your skin is just purging the bad stuff, but this should subside after subsequent use, the other issues we just mentioned (burning, irritation, severe acne and breakouts) on the other hand are not normal and the product that caused that reaction should be discontinued. I really hope this helps clarify, please don't hesitate to reach out with questions. Xo,
